Effects of sowing dates and cultivars on the growth of melons in the greenhouse in winter

Six muskmelon cultivars, five of the "Galia" type and one American type, were sown in greenhouses at Mevo Hamma (northeastern Israel) on three dates: 23 October, 1 and 10 November 1989. In addition, "Galia" seedlings, 14 days after being sown in "speedling" trays, were transplanted to the greenhouses on these dates. The first yield cycle lasted 2 months (January-February). Of the "Galia" type cultivars, "Arava" and "Galit" were the earliest maturing, "Qalya" intermediate, and "Gala" ("C8") and "Galia" the latest. "Petra", the American-type cultivar, was very late in maturing. The "Galia" transplants began yielding 11 days earlier than the direct seeded plants. Most of the differences among the cultivars were small, bur in general "Arava" and "Galit" gave the best results. Plants of the first sowing had the most leaf yellowing, a physio logical disorder, and were slow in renewing vegetative growth after completion of the first yield cycle in early March. At the peak of the yield cycle the cultivars were selectively damaged by leaf miners, with "Petra" damaged the most.
