[Response of potato cultivars to tuber seed size]

An experiment was conducted at the Jordan Valley over two growing seasons (1987 and 1988) to study the response of potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.) to tuber seed size. The treatments consisted of all combinations of four potato cultivars (Spunta, Mirka, Diamont, and Explora) and three sizes of potato seed (40-50, 70-80, and 115-145 g). Averaged over seed size, no significant differences in total and graded yields were found among cultivars in both seasons. Total and graded yields were increased significantly, and not significantly with the increase in tuber seed size in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Seed size x cultivars interaction was significant for all aspects of potato yields in the first season and for few aspects of yield in the second season. In the first season, the highest yield was obtained from Spunta with large seed size tubers (29.27 T/ha), giving a yield: seed ratio 6.76:1. But the highest yield: seed ratio was Diamont with small seed tubers (14.17:1). Similar trends were obtained in the second season. The highest yield: seed ratio was obtained from Mirka with small seed tuber (35.22:1). Yield: seed ratio were higher for all cultivars and both seasons in small seed tubers as compared to medium or large seeds
