Soil erosion problems and possible solutions in the Longonot/Kijabe Hill area of Rift Valley Province, Kenya

A major feature of post-independence Kenya has been the outmigration of people from densely populated high potential areas and settlement in marginal-rainfall areas which were previously used for ranching. There has been no proper land evaluation, land use planning or conservation layout and this has led to problems of soil erosion especially where the settlement has been on erodible soils or sloping land. An example of this is the Longonot/Kijabe area in the floor of the eastern Rift Valley in Kenya. Various studies have been carried out in the area and this paper reviews their findings and gives recommendations
