Legume growth on mine tailings in the Naseby Forest

Three experiments on mine tailings in the Naseby Forest New Zealand were conducted between 1983-1989. Experiment One evaluated Maku lotus (Lotus pendunculatus L.), Tana birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) growth on an open site, with treatments of P at 0, 10, 20, and 40 kg/ha. Experiment Two evaluated Pawera red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), Tetra alsike clover (T. hybridum L.) and Leo birdsfoot trefoil growth on an adjacent site. Experiment Three evaluated Maku lotus and Tana birdsfoot trefoil growth in the shelter of trees. Tree growth was recorded in both legume treatments and in the absence of legumes. The conclusions are that: Tana birdsfoot trefoil can be successfully established and maintained on mine tailings in the Naseby forest and have a positive effect on tree growth and soil conditions; The excellent establishment of Pawera red clover indicated that it can be a valid option in this situation although persistence during moisture stress may limit its use to a short term role; The introduction of legumes enhanced both soil characteristics and tree development
