Endomycorrhiza for increased production of selected agricultural crops: factors that influence mass production of endomycorrhizal inocula

Several experiments were conducted to identify some factors that influence the production of a high quality VAM [vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae] inoculum under screenhouse, growth room and laboratory conditions. In screenhouse condition, 7 host plants were screened for their suitability for mass production of G. [Gigaspora] morseae, G. fasciculatum, and Gigaspora sp. Among the seven host plants tested, Stylosanthes sp. and Crotalaria sp. were found to be superior for the three VAM species. These were followed by sorghum for Gigaspora sp. and G. mosseae, and mungbean for G. fasciculatum. The estimated number of infected propagules produced varied from host to host and VAM species combinations. In growth room, only few spores if any were recovered from the potting medium where different VA endophytes were allowed to grow. However, the host plant rooted vigorously regardless of VAM endophytes used and these were heavily mycorrhizal. The potency of these mycorrhizal roots are still being assessed. In laboratory condition, sterilized and unsterilized Gigaspora gigantes spores grew in modified and Melins Norkrans media. Hyphal growth and extension was observed even beyond the block of agar used. If these hyphal can initiate infection they could be used as a starter inocula for mass inocula production.
