Influence of timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on the performance of ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaudichaud) grown rhizomes and stem cuttings
1989
Guarino, R.L. (Southeastern Philippines Univ., Apokon, Davao City (Philippines). Coll. of Agriculture)
The results showed that performance of ramie grown by rhizomes and by stem cuttings were not significantly different, except in plant height during the first harvest, indicating that stem cutting is comparable to rhizomes as planting material in the later stages of growth and development. Nitrogen fertilizer application in split dose, 50% N during harvest and other 50% 14 days after harvest gave the highest yield in both planting materials, however, it did not show significant difference. Likewise the effect of nitrogen fertilizer application on the agronomic characters did not show significant difference from first to fourth harvest. It was also observed that reduction of fiber yield in ramie production was due to environmental effect, specifically, poor drainage and low rainfall. On the economic aspect, ramie grown by stem cuttings was advantageous over that of rhizomes. Production cost of ramie grown by stem cuttings was lesser as amortized every cropping cycle.
