Yield and yield components responses of diverse cowpea genotypes to saturated and dry soil moisture regimes in a post-rice environment

Experiments were conducted during the dry season of 1986-87 and 1988, in IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] to determine the yield and yield components responses of diverse cowpea cultivars to a range of soil moisture regimes during the vegetative stage on a Typic Tropudalf Maahas clay soil with a fluctuating shallow water table, using a linesource sprinkler irrigation system. Two medium maturing cultivars (TVX 1948-012F and TVX 3871-02F) and two early maturing cultivars (IT82D-889 and CES41-6) were selected from 1986-87 dry season experiment for further study in 1988 dry season. In both years, medium maturing cultivars performed better than the early maturing ones under a saturated soil moisture regime. Yield components were negatively linearly correlated with increasingly wet soil moisture regimes. Among yield components, the number of pods per plant was most affected by over saturated soil moisture regime in all four cultivars. Phenology was delayed in an over saturated soil moisture regime.
