Nutritional value of copra meal treated with bacterial mannanase in broiler diets

Streptomyces sp. no. 17, which was isolated from Philippine soils, was used as source of mannanase enzyme. Copra meal was hydrolyzed by the enzyme solution for 24 hr. Enzyme-treated copra meal showed a marked reduction in crude fiber (6.32%) compared to the untreated copra meal (12.68%). Significant improvements were noted in the apparent digestible dry matter (68.31 to 80.98%), crude protein (49.68 to 61.16 %), crude fat (83.27 to 91.47%), crude fiber (25.51 to 61.88%) and NFE [nitrogen-free extract] (82.96 to 93.19%) of diets with mannanase-treated copra meal compared to those with untreated copra meal the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) of diets with mannanase-treated copra meal also increased significantly (3078.00 Kcal/kg) compared to diets with untreated copra meal (2595.67 Kcal/kg). There was no significant difference in feed consumption of broilers fed diets with untreated and mannanase treated copra meal. Weight gain (433.84 to 558.49 g) and efficiency of feed utilization (2.78 to 2.13) of broilers were significantly improved with diets containing mannanase-treated copra meal than with diets containing untreated copra meal
