Protectant effect of powdered black pepper, neem, and sugar apple seeds on stored cereals against Rhyzopertha dominica (Fab.)

Results of the study showed that the average total developmental period of Rhyzopertha dominica lasted 50, 44 and 36.7 days in non-treated yellow corn, milled rice and wheat, respectively. The colorless eggs were laid singly or in cluster on the loose grains, between kernels, and grain dust or inside cavities made by the female adult. There were four instar larvae which varied in duration on different substrates used. The results also showed that the powdered plant products had shorter residual effects (effective only up to 60 days) at all concentrations compared with pirimiphosmethyl insecticides which was still effective up to 180 days. Adult emergence, number of eggs laid, total larval development, growth index, percent infestation, and percent weight loss of the three cereal grains was greatly affected by the application of neem seed powder at the rate of 5% by weight.
