Effects of plant population on the growth, yield, ethanol and fodder production of three varieties of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)

The findings of this investigation revealed the significant differences among three varieties of sweet sorghum on their growth and yield performance as affected by different plant populations. No significant effect of plant population was observed among the varieties in their capacity to produce sweet juice. However, varietal differences were found. Keller produced the sweetest juice registering 18.5% Brix value, Wray 17.4, and Rio 16.3%. Significant differences were found among the varieties in their ability to accumulate sugar at different growth stages as affected by plant populations. No significant differences were found on the amount of distiller dried grain recovery among varieties and plant populations. However, differences were found on crude protein content. Significant differences were found among the three varieties on their capacity to produce forage as affected by the different plant populations. Significant differences were found among the three varieties of sweet sorghum in their capacity to produce grain and juice for ethanol production. Some significant interactions were found among the three varieties of sweet sorghum and plant populations on the production of grain and sugar for fermentation.
