Two baiting schemes using 7.5 g waxblock baits containing 005% bromadiolone were compared with sustained baiting (SBW), the currently recommended rat control technique for growing rice. Treatments were primarily against Rattus rattus mindanensis in lowland ricefields. Baits, labor inputs, average yield of rice, prevailing prices of produce and losses observed in the experimental plots were the basis for comparing the efficacy of the different treatments. The baiting rate of 50 bait blocks/ha/week (B50) did not significantly reduce the damaged tillers (5.6%) compared with the untreated reference (7.6%) while both SBW (3.6%) and B100 (5.2%) had significantly lower damaged tillers. Baiting with bromadiolone (B100) at 100 bait blocks/ha every 14 days was comparable with sustained baiting with respect to the degree of protection on the growing rice.
