Elucidation of the chemical nature of corn resistance to neonate black cutworm larvae

Corn leaf extracts of PI257632 (antibiotic) and WF9 (susceptible check) were bioassayed and their effects on weight gains and nutritional performance indices of neonate black cutworm (BCW) larvae were measured after a defined feeding period (when control diet was almost completely consumed). Dry weight gain (DWG) of BCW larvae on diet mixed with methanol extract of PI257632 was significantly lower than that on diet mixed with similar extract of WF9. This lower DWG was due to significantly lower percent ECI (efficiency of conversion of ingested food) than anything else. Compared to the control diet, significantly lower percent ECI and DWE (dry weight eaten) values of the methanol extract of PI257632 might have caused the DWG to be significantly lower. On the other hand, DWG's of larvae on diets mixed with various extracts and residue of WF9 were not significantly different from that on the control diet.
