Spread of rice tungro virus (RTV) using different proportion of source plants infected with rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) and rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) was evaluated in caged method under glasshouse conditions. Percentage of tungro infection increased as the number of source plants increased irrespective of RTBV or RTSV infected source plants used. Transmission of RTSV was comparatively much higher than that of RTBV or by both RTBV and RTSV infection with the increasing number of RTSV infected source with fixed number of RTBV infected plants in each proportion. Correspondingly, percentage of RTBV infection was minimum even with increasing the number of source of RTBV infected plants. When plants infected individually by RTBV or RTSV were mixed with the fixed number of plants infected by both the viruses, transmission of RTSV was also higher than that of RTBV infection. Plants infected by both the viruses did not differ significantly with different proportion of RTBV or RTSV source used. In a separate experiment plants infected individually by RTBV and RTSV of cv. TN1 were mixed equally in cage. Virus-free green leafhopper (GLH) at the rate of 2-3 per plant was released for acquisition- inoculation feeding for 2 days to examine the rate of cross infection within the infected plants. The results indicated the chances of cross infection was not so pronounced within this time period. The GLH which were used for the cross inoculation tested for their virulification in TN1 most of the GLH transmitted RTSV alone which suggested that chances for uptake of RTBV after feeding RTSV infected source is very minimal under the present condition.
