Effects of temperature and moisture contents on aflatoxin content in corns

Quantitative study of aflatoxin in two types of corn, Suwan I and Suwan II, was performed by CB method of AOAC 1980. The corns were inoculated with Aspergillus flavus suspension of 10 (exp.7) spores per one kilogram of corn. Then moisture contents of the corns were adjusted into 3 catagories, 14.5 %, 18 % and 26 %. They were incubated in three different temperatures, at 30 deg. Celsius, 35 deg.Celsius, and 40 deg. Celsius for 2,4 and 8 days. Analysis for aflatoxin B1 and B2 content in the corn of each condition was done afterwards. It was found that aflatoxin B1 contents of the 18 % moisture corns treated at 35 deg. Celsius for 4 days were the highest, 1718.43 ppb for Suwan I and 218.01 ppb for Suwan II. But at the 26 % moisture level, the amounts of aflatoxin B1 found in both types of corn were the least because the corns were infected with bacteria and yeast instead of mold. Results has been shown that temperature of between 30 deg. celsius to 40 deg. celsius with low moisture content of below 14.5 % would be a recommunded storage condition for exported corn.
