Acute toxicity of mercury and copper to the golden apple snail Pomacea sp.

An acute toxicity of mercury and copper to the golden apple snail, Pomacea sp. by static bioassay was studied. The sizes of the snail ranged between 0.7 to 1.4 cm. in width and 1 to 1.7 cm. in length. The mercury concentrations used for this experiment were 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 1 and 2 ppm respectively. The toxicity determined by median lethal concentration (LC50) at 48, 72 and 96 hours were 1.6, 0.9 and 0.6 ppm respectively. The copper concentrations used for this experiment were 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 ppm. The toxicity determined by median lethal concentration (LC50) at 48, 72 and 96 hours were 30, 18 and 12 ppm respectively, The result revealed that mercury is more toxic than copper. If 0.1 was used as an application factor, the safe concentrations of mercury and copper would be 0.06 and 1.2 ppm respectively.
