The influence of different starting and finished masses on important indicators of fattening steer performance

The steer gain is influenced by starting and finished body masses of animals. The feed utilization decreases with age, so that the lowest energy and protein consumptions were with animals which first enter in the process of fattening. Generally, the gains as well as energy consumption were moderate. That could be in relation with protein content in the concentrate mixture, but is not enough when corn silage is fed ad libidum. The feed is important factor in the carcass composition. An insignificant increase in dressing percentage was observed at significant increase in live mass of steers fed with mixed ration. The steers could be succesfully fattened with limited amount of concentrate and whole plant maize silage fed ad libidum, but with gradual adaptation to such ration composition.
