Relationship between the age of animals affected with enzootic Bovine leucosis and the degree of the reactions in agar gel immunodifusion test

Diagnostic serological study of Enzootic bovine Leukosis by agar gel immunodifusion test (AGID) was performed on 4 state farms (Yugoslavia) over the period of 1984. to 1987., on 4,827 breeding cows of Holstein and East Friesian race and on the cross-bred offspring of these. There were 660 positive reactions, for which AGID test was replicated twice or more times and the results studied before final diagnosis was made. The test yielded the following results: 46 (6.97%) serum samples produced mild reactions, 217 (32.88%) positive reactions, 260 (39.39%) highly positive reactions, and 137 (20.76%) extremely high reactions. Furthermore, the study of relationship of the degree of reaction with the age of animals showed that sera of older animals produced mild reactions in larger number of cases, while sera from very young animals had manly positive reactions. However, with sera from animals aged 2-7 years reactions were of a still higher degree, and with sera of animals of 3-5 years of age reactions were mainly of an extremely high degree in AGID test.
