Studies on the free living nitrogen fixing bacteria in rice production

The occurrence and distribution of free living nitrogen fixing bacteria in rice fields of ten different soil types were assessed. Maximum count (3,043/gm soil) was recorded in Non-calcareous Alluvium followed by Grey Floodplain soil (2,130/gm soil). The population was lowest in Red Brown Terrace soil (85/gm soil). The proliferation of the cultures was higher in top soils and scare in sub soils. High soil phosphorus and carbon and mild acidity (near neutral pH) were found to be conducive to the growth of the cultures. It was also observed that the population was maximum during monsoon with a sharp decrease in winter in some soils.
