Correlates of change agents' exposure to professional publications [in Philippines]

Relationships of change agents' characteristics with exposure to professional publications were studied with 88 subjects randomly selected in two Philippines provinces-Leyte and southern Leyte. Data were personally collected through and structured schedule. Publications included in the study were 14 books and 6 magazines which were published either by the national publishers, the MAF or the IRRI. Analysis on individual publication showed that of the 14 books, 7 were read to a low level, 6 to a moderate level and only one, 16 steps Masagana 99, was read to a high level. Of the 6 magazines, five were read to low level and one, Greefields, was read to a high level. On merging the data for comprehensive exposure by volumes of books and issues of journals, the mean was found to be only 11. Further, 49 percent of the agents was exposed to low level, 36 percent to moderate level and 13 percent to high level. However, only 2 percent of the agents was not exposed at all. Test of hypotheses showed that there was no relationship between change agents' age, sex, type of graduation, academic achievement, major field of study, farming experience, and professional experience on the one hand, and their exposure to publications, on the other. However, significant relationship was observed between agents' contact with research centers and their exposure to publications.
