[Red tide episodes and monitoring of diarrhoeic and paralytic shellfish poisoning in Chile]

The bloom of dinoflagellates produces the biological phenomenon called red tide. This toxigenic dinoflagellate are concentrated by shellfish during filter feeding. Human consumption of contaminated shellfish, produces abdominal pain or complete paralysis and death due to respiratory failure. 355 samples collected were analyzed according to the A.O.A.C. Biological Methods for Paralytic shellfish poisoning, and the method for the Bioassay of Gymnodinium breve toxin. The implementation by the authorities of a monitoring program will be needed to reduce the risk, which should include toxicological controls, phytoplankton study and vigilance of the affected areas
