[Action of MCPA and Bentazon on weeds and its effect on peas]

A trial was carried out in order to evaluate the efficiency of the herbicides MCPA and Bentazon on weed control in peas cv. Perfected Freezer, and to determine the crop tolerance to such chemicals. In each block, previous to applications of the different herbicide treatments, two sections of 1 m2 each were selected to identify the weed species and to determine their developmental stages. The herbicide effect on plant growth and other parameters such as, foliar area and dry matter of leaves, stems and pods were determined. Finally, the yield per plant and per unit area. The herbicides evaluated were applied at two development stages (four and nine vegetative nodes in the main stem of the plants). Regardless of the development stages at application time, Bentazon presented a high crop selectivity. MCPA applications resulted in less plant growth in height, delayed development and the occurrence of plant abnormalities (twisted and widened stems and highly developed tendrils). When MCPA was applied at doses of 350 and 500 g ai/ha, it showed a good control of species such as Capsella bursa-pastoris L., Urtica urens L., Chenopodium album L., Brassica rapa L. and Daucus carota L.; besides, it delayed the growth of Lamiun amplexicaule L. and Polygonum aviculare L. Conversely, Bentazon at its only dose of 1.000 g ai/ha had little control of weeds and was effective only on the species Urtica urens L. and Stellaria media L. Vill. With respect to yield, significant differences were not found. In spite of the delay in plant development caused by MCPA, the plants could recover and reached harvest time with a yield similar to that of the untreated plants
