Influence of gypsy moth larvae age on the development of microsporidian diseases

The susceptibility of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar, Lepidoptera, Lymantriidae) to Nosema lymantriae (Protozoa, Microsporidia) was examined in the laboratory bioassays. The effect of pathogen on the larvae of different age was observed every fifth day during the larval stage and the final efficacy of pathogen was determined after development of adults. Nosema lymantriae was very active against young larvae (efficacy over 80 per cent during 15 days and 90-100 per cent at the end of larval development). However, the effect to middle age larvae was not so intensive (up to 70-85 per cent at the end of larval development). The microsporidian spores were present in dead pupae and in living adults too.
