The survey was carried out with indicator plants and animal organs. As indicator plants alfalfa, red clover, rye and wheat were gathered at the same developmental stage. Hair samples were simultaneously taken from animals grazing in the same area. The animal organs were collected at alaughterhouses from animal populations coming from the country's different parts taking into account the age of the animals /the average for dairy cows 8, for sheep 3, for horses 15 years/. The morphologically older plants contained significantly less zinc than did the younger ones. Significant correlations were found between the zinc content of 2-2 plant species grown on the same location /alfalfa:red clover r = 0.18, wheat:red clover r = 0.86, rye:clover r = 0.67, wheat:rye r = 0.86/. The zinc content of the indicator plants is significantly, by 18-39 o/o, smaller in Hungary than in the neighbouring countries of Middle Europe. The ratio of zinc concentration in rib:hair /wool/ is close in the examined animal species. In cows and fattened bulls 1:2, in sheep 1:1, in horse 1:1.
