Interrelation of energy and protein supply at young bull fattening

Hereford x Hungarian Fleckvieh x Charolais and Hereford x Hungarian Fleckvieh hybrid young bulls kept in loose housing and small groups received the following treatments; great energy - great protein /GE-GF/; greatenergy - small protein /GE-SP/; small energy - great protein /SE-GF/; small energy - small protein /SE-SP/ supply. The "small energy" groups received protein supplementation of different quantity and ad libitum maize silage. The "great energy" groups received in addition, maize grits in restricted quantity. The development of weight increase at the groups GE-GP, GE-SP, SE-GP and SE-SP, in g/day was: 1454, 1304, 1146 and 1064, resp. The effect of protein was less expressed than that of the energy. The increas of the protein supply influenced significantly the weight increase only at the high level energy supply. The low protein supply can partly be counterbalanced by offering surplus energy, the low energy supply by offering surplus protein. The performance of bulls fed in this way, however, fell behind the weight increase of those whose supplies were balanced with protein and energy.
