The manganese content was determined among food plants cultivated on different soils. Alfalfa, red clover, wheat and rye were used as indicator plants. The changes of manganese content was followed during plant growth. The Mn content of alfalfa decreased by 18 o/o during plant growth. The Mn content of meadow and field red clovers decreased by 14 o/o and - during 6 weeks - by 37 o/o, resp. The significant decrease in the rye, wheat and blue grass was 66, 44 and 56 o/o, resp. Comparison of single soil types becomes possible by soil specifing tracing on the Mn content of indicator plants, as the manganese content of the indicator plants is species specific. The degree of Mn state of supply in animals was determined by the means of indicator organs /liver, hairs, kidneys, cerebrum, ribs/. As a consequence of deficient manganese state of supply, the Mn content of the liver, hairs, kidneys and cerebrum decreased by 59, 48 and 38 o/o, resp. The Mn deficiency in Hungary is general and of a high degree in the feeding of ruminants and horses.
