Sugar cane extension and technical support services to sugar cane farmers of Belize

Sugar cane production in Belize had declined dramatically since 1985. Factors such as depressed prices, the presence of a sugar cane smut disease epidemic, and the lack of guidance for sugar cane farmers contributed to this decline. In order to reverse this trend, a Sugar Cane Extension and Technical Support Service (SETSS) was introduced in 1987 to work directly with farmers, if possible through contact farmers. This paper reviews this innovative programme, its philosophy and methodology, plan of work, and results.
