Issues in food security in Jamaica

The present document was one of the background studies prepared for the workshop on "Food and Nutrition Security in Jamaica in the 1980's and Beyond" organized by the National Food and Nutrition Co-ordinating Committee of Jamaica (NFNCCJ) and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI). It examines the current food demand and supply situation in Jamaica based on trends in income levels and distribution, food expenditure, domestic food production and imports, national and per capita food availability and existing Government policies and programmes. The predicted trends for food demand and supply for the 1986-1990 period are discussed. Measures are then suggested which can be introduced to ensure greater food and nutrition security for the population, and concludes with a discussion on the requirement for a food strategy and recommendations for future actions.
