Observation of the boundary eddies on the warm core ring off Kushiro [Japan]

A typical warm core ring has been observed during October 1984 in the sea area off Kushiro, which is located on the south side of Hokkaido. The diameter of the warm core ring is about 200km and the maximum core temperature gradually decreases in the surface layer from 19 degrees to 16 degrees centigrade during 2-19 October. The northern boundary of the warm core ring is found along the continental slope between the continental shelf water and the main body of the warm core ring. A conspicuous disturbance is clearly indicated on this northern boundary in a series of infrared satellite images which were received at the Kushiro receiving station. The disturbance wave of the northern boundary mostly consists of a series of boundary eddies that were arranged at intervals along the continental slope. The duration of the boundary eddies is estimated at 1-2 days, with a transition period to the next type in the sequence in 1-4 days. In addition, hydrographic observations have been made on the detailed structure of the boundary eddies by referring to the most up-to-date of the satellite images.
