Dry matter accumulation and chlorophyll content in rice plant affected by Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae

Physiological disorder of rice plant due to Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae (Xco) infection were studied on a compatible rice-Xco combination using six inoculum densities. Plant dry matter accumulation was significantly reduced following decline of photosynthetic leaf area. Phytomass, total plant dry weight and photosynthetic leaf area were negatively correlated with disease severity. Both X-coefficients (slopes) and correlation coefficients (r values) of disease severity with above parameters were increased over time (weeks after inoculation) indicating time after inoculation can influence plant growth. Initial inoculum dosage played an important role in disease development. Increasing in leaf weight ratio (LWR) may indicate that source-sink system of host plant is influenced by the pathogen infection. Total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll b content are reduced obviously throughout recording time due to bacterial infection. However, chlorophyll a started declining from 3rd week observation indicating that chlorophyll a is less sensitive to Xco pathogen than chlorophyll b.
