Trends in weed science research in the Philippines were determined based on papers presented in conferences on crop protection, articles in scientific journals, theses manuscripts of students in weed science, and annual reports of some research institutions from 1978 to 1988. The first four highest ranking research areas were evaluation and development of weed control approaches in monoculture crops (61.0%), weed ecology (21.0%), weeds and weed control in cropping systems (4.3%), and weed biology (3.6%). The least studied area was biological control (0.4%). Fifty percent of the reports on evaluation and development of weed control approaches dealt on rice, 16.0%, on plantation crops, 12.0% each for field legumes and corn, and 9.0% on vegetable crops. The distribution of the studies conducted on rice was 43.0, 35.0 and 21.0% on transplanted, direct-seeded wetland and upland rice culture, respectively. Majority of the control approaches evaluated in rice and plantation crops were chemical methods while those tested in corn, field legumes and vegetable crops were mostly physical or cultural methods.
