A farming system on crop-goat integration was studied in the marginal hilly areas in Barangay Tina, Makato, Aklan [Philippines] from 1988. The general objective was to provide a continuing income/cash flow to small farmers in order to improve their quality of life. The specific objectives were to : (1) make marginal hilly areas productive by employing contour-strip farming; (2) utilize crop-by-products as feeds to goats; (3) use crop-by-products and herbage from hedgerows as fertilizer and (4) improve farmer's diet by providing animal protein. The goats were integrated with cropping pattern of upland rice inter-cropped with corn and sequenced by peanut. These crops were planted between spaces of contoured-double rows of ipil-ipil. For three years, the crop-goat integrated farming system gave much higher net return than the farmers' practice (upland rice alone) which the goat has contributed largely.
