Potato germplasm evaluation in a hot environment of Vietnam

Potato production in the hot lowlands of south Vietnam has not yet been successfully adopted by farmers due to a lack of suitable adopted cultivar. This research was conducted to evaluate introduced potato germplasm. Out of 58 clones evaluated, 4 clones, i.e. B71-240.2, 378597.1, LT-7, and I-1035 proved to be outstanding on two types of soils. These clones had vigorous plant growth, high, tuber yield (over 20 t/ha) of good quality tubers, early tuber initiation, and well developed canopy cover. LT-7 had good tuber storage characteristics. The clones 378597.1, I-1035 and Atlantic had large average tuber size (over 80 g). Tuber yield was positively correlated with stem number, branch number, stem diameter and canopy cover and average tuber weight on the sandy soil (r = 0.31, 0.47, 0.40, 0.30 and 0.49, respectively) and negatively correlated with branch number and stem diameter on the clay soil (r = -0.15 and -0.22, respectively). The best clones were multiplied in the highlands for further testing on the lowlands.
