Effect of vegetative cover on soil loss and surface runoff

The rainfall distribution patterns during the study period followed the same trends as those of the preceding 39 years. Of the total 44 storms, 21 storms (or 47.73 percent) produced surface runoff and were considered erosive. The bare plot registered the highest amount of soil loss of 18.87 t/ha. Among the cropped plots, the wide spaced corn treatment produced the highest amount of soil loss (12.96 t/ha) followed by narrow spaced corn (10.59 t/ha), wide spaced mungbean (4.73 t/ha) and narrow spaced mungbean (4.42 t/ha). The same trend was observed in the case of surface runoff. Surface runoff, runoff coefficient, and soil loss were reduced with increased vegetative cover. Inverse linear and exponential relationships were observed between percent vegetative cover and soil loss ratio for the corn and mungbean crops, respectively. Of the rainfall erosivity indices, soil loss was better correlated with rainfall amount than with other commonly used erosivity indices.
