Note: potential plant extracts for the control of azolla fungal pathogens

Plant species reported to have medicinal value and fungicidal properties on other fungal genera were collected and extracted using water. Crude water extracts of 7 out of 127 species screened in vitro for their fungicidal properties showed inhibitory activity, against Azolla pathogens (Rhizoctonia-like isolates no. 1 and no. 8 and Sclerotium sp.). Crude garlic extract (Allium sativum) was found most effective against Azolla pathogens. Other plant extracts were particularly effective against specific fungal pathogen tested. All extracts at 1:1 concentration, sulasi (Ocinum satum) was found quite effective on Rhizoctonia-like no. 1; black pepper (Piper nigrum) was very effective on Rhizoctonia-like no. 8 while bunlao (Justicia gendarusa) and talisay (Terminalia catappa) were quite effective on the same isolate. Kalachuchi (Plumeria acuminata) and tsaang gubat (Jatropa curcas) were quite effective on Sclerotium sp. Since garlic was observed to be the most effective plant extract against all azolla pathogens, it was prioritized for testing of its protective and therapeutic effects in the greenhouse. Results of the protective and eradicative effects of the garlic extracts on various Azolla pathogens showed that they have better therapeutic than protective effect.
