The chromosome number of Clitoria ternatea L. is 2n=16. Ring bivalents were observed in a few cells. Abnormalities such as laggards, non-congression, early disjunction and late disjunction of bivalents were observed during metaphase 1 and 2 and anaphase 1. Meiotic chromosome behavior at anaphase 2 and telophase 1 and 2 were found to be normal. Analyses of pachytene chromosomes showed that chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are metacentric, while chromosomes 2 and 7 are submetacentric or acrocentric. Their lengths range from 19.1 to 68.2 microns. The high frequency of bivalent formation during diakinesis and the normal chromosome behavior during the later meiotic stages explain the production of fertile gametes in C. ternatea. Pollen fertility ranged from 93.38% to 97-94%.
