The effect of hardening treatment on falcata (Paraserianthes falcataria L. Nielsen) seedling growth in the nursery was determined by subjecting the seedlings to various periods of exposure to direct sunlight. The study revealed that raising falcata seedlings in the nursery under plastic shed for 24 to 38 days (from date of sowing) and subsequently exposing them in the open for 7 to 21 days resulted in shorter but hardened seedlings. Seedlings kept under the shed for 24 to 31 days and then exposed in the open for 14 to 21 days gave better field survival and growth rates than unhardened seedlings. The 14 and 21 day period of hardening in the nursery is therefore recommended for falcata seedlings.
