Comparative study of the natural and artificial diet of the silkworm (Bombyx mori Linn)

A study was conducted on the yield and quality of cocoons of four hybrid strains of silkworms from Thailand and Philippines fed with natural (fresh mulberry leaves) and artificial diets. Results showed that silkworms fed with natural diet produced quality cocoons and higher fecundity of the female adults. However, artificial diet sustained the development of the larvae to maturity of the insects and low larval mortality was obtained because of the asceptic preparation of the artificial diet before feeding the silkworm. All the silkworm strains proved to be promising on the production of quality cocoons if they are given adequate amount of diet with proper nutrient composition of the right stage of their development. The economic feasibility of silkworm cocoon production through improved artificial diet for suppression of disease and its availability at any time of the year need further attention for the viable commercial scale silk production.
