Assay on the antifungal properties of different plant leaf extracts against some pathogens of cereals

The objective of the study was to screen different plant leaf extracts for their possible antifungal properties. Extracts from thirty higher plant leaves tested against six fungi were given. The organisms tested were: Helminthosporium oryzae, H. maydis, H. sorghicola, Curvularia oryzae, C. lunata and Fusarium moniliforme. For purposes of comparison, Delsene Mx a commercial fungicide was also used. The antifungal properties of leaf extracts was evaluated by mixing the plant materials with PDA [Potato Dextrose Agar] after which the increment colony growth of the organisms was measured after the second, fourth, and seventh day of incubation. Extracts from leaves of kamias, kutsai, kamantigue, camote, ampalaya, okra, kulasiman, saluyot, mayana, damong maria, papaya, calamansi, and sampaloc inhibited C. lunata. Kamias was found to be the most effective by reducing colony growth. Colony growth of C. oryzae was inhibited by leaves of kulasiman, sampalok, suwag kabayo, katakataka, luya, kutsai, and kamantigue. Calamansi leaf extract was observed to be most effective against H. oryzae. However, uray, sambong, kamote, and ampalaya were also observed to control colony growth of the fungus. Only the extract of kamantigue was noted to be inhibitory to F. moniliforme, the colony growth of H. maydis was inhibited by calamansi and siling labuyo, however that of H. sorghicola was easily controlled by almost all the leaf materials except by akapulco, kamote, tanglad, okra, ampalaya, kulasiman, and saluyot.
