Performances of single- and two-phased fermentations of slop waste under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions were tested to determine which of the two is the more efficient process. The efficiencies of these processes were measured in terms of biogas produced, reduction in COD [chemical oxygen demand] value, and utilization of volatile fatty acids (VFA) formed at different COD loadings. The two-phase thermophilic fermentation was the most efficient process with 41 l of biogas (60% methane) produced, 27% COD removed, and 50% VPA at a loading rate of 0.015 kg/l.
