Growth and yield of corn as affected by nitrogen fertilizer and intercrop in the upland irrigated areas under Magalang Arayat Task Force (MARATAF) of Pampanga (Philippines)
1990
Rodriguez, S.L.
Findings of the study revealed the following: (1) The height of corn at 30 DAS [days after sowing] and at maturity were not affected by the different intercrops, but significantly affected by the different levels of nitrogen fertilizer; (2) The length of ears, diameter of ears, weight of ears, the number of ears yield/plot, the herbage yield, and the net income of super sweet corn were not affected by the different intercrops but significantly affected by the various levels of nitrogen fertilizer; (3) Mungbean and cucumber were not compatible to main crop corn; (4) Soybeans and sweet potato were possible companion plant for corn; (5) Corn as monocrop was outranked by the corn intercrop combinations such as the corn + soybeans and corn + sweet potato on the income and return on investment, except for the least income produced from the corn and intercrop combinations such as the corn + cucumber and corn + mungbean; (6) The best possible companion plant to corn is soybean and sweet potato at 120 kg N/ha as shown in return on investment of P43,794.59/ha and 73.20% respectively; and (7) Among the different corn + intercrop combinations, the super sweet corn + sweet potato at 120 kg N/ha produced the highest net income and return on investment of P43,794.59/ha and 73.20% respectively. It was followed by yellow corn + soybean at 120 kg N/ha with a net income and return on investment of P40,473.84/ha and 73.00% respectively.
