Finishing oils suitable for application on wood and related products have been formulated using the oil extracted from the seeds of lumbang (Aleurites moluccana Wild.) tree. The process consists of initially heating the extracted oil to 95 deg C then adding 24% bad naphthenate solution at a proportion equivalent to 1.5% by weight of oil and 6% cobalt naphthenate at an amount equivalent to 0.5% of oil. The mixture is further heated to 180 deg C before finally adding paint thinner or a 1:1 oil-to-thinner ratio by volume for one formulation and 1:2 oil-to-thinner ratio by volume for another formulation. Performance tests results show that the formulated finishing oils are comparable with or even better than a leading brand of commercially available finishing oil. These positive factors are expected to favor the use of lumbang, finishing oil in the production of high quality wood furniture and related articles for both the domestic and export markets.
