Integrated pest management research and development status on corn in the Philippines

Presently, most of the IPM [Integrated Pest Management] techniques in corn are in the first level of integration (single pest species). The primary target is Asian corn borer, with field sanitation, use of resistant variety, early planting, and detasseling 67-75% of the plants before pollen shedding as basic pest management components. A combination of the following measures could be added at the whorl stage based on economic threshold level: 1) spot treatment of insecticide, 2) inundative release of Trichogramma evanescens, 3) application of Bacillus thuringiensis, and 4) release of predatory earwigs. For corn downy mildew, the IPM strategies consist of a combination of the use of resistant variety, cultural control and seed treatment with Ridomil. Weed control combination of chemical and cultural control. The use of anti-coagulant rodenticides has been developed as an effective method of reducing losses due to rodents. Most components of IPM in corn on different individual pests have not been packaged as a unit to control all major pests of corn. IPM research for all groups of pests have been initiated lately with promising results but have never been verified in different places. IPM in corn needs more essential information and materials for its implementation. Basic knowledge on the inter-relationship of crops, pests and natural enemies must be generated. Projects to develop comprehensive multi-pest IPM schemes, synchronized with and integrated into optimal crop production system, are in an early research for all purposes. It would take a longer time to implement the highest level of IPM system (all pests) in corn in the Philippines.
