[Stomatal frequency in bread wheat under irrigated and rain fed conditions]

In a study conducted to measure the stomatal frequency in 14 bread wheat varieties grown under irrigated, high-fertility, and rainfed low-fertility conditions at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, India the analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the genotypes in the stomatal frequency of the upper and lower epidermis under both environments. The genotypes responsive to high fertility and irrigation , with the exception of Timgalin and Moti, had a higher stomatal frequency, while the drought resistant genotypes had intermediate numbers of stomata per unit area. The upper surface leaf surface had 14.7 more stomata than the lower leaf. Significant differences among the genotypes in stomatal length under rain fed conditions were observed.
