Cultivation of Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa on cassava solid wastes as fish feed and improvement of cell culture and nutritional quality by mixed culture with Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides P 47

This study concerned with the nutritional enrichment of the cassava solid waste by using a photosynthetic bacterium, rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa, which could directly utilize starch. The mixed culture of R. gelatinosa and R. sphaeroides P 47 was also investigated to improve fermentation efficiency and nutritional quality of the final product. The fermentation of solid waste medium with monoculture of R. gelatinosa and mixed culture of R. gelatinosa and R. sphaeroides P 47 (1:1 proportion by cell number) under the optimal culture conditions indicated that the monoculture fermentation required 5 days and yielded final cell mass of 24.04 g dry cell per litre whereas the mixed culture fermentation needed only 3 days to yield 28.87 g dry cell per litre. The nutritional analyses of R. gelatinosa cells, the mixed culture-cell mass, the solid waste fermented with monoculture and mixed cultures revealed that the crude protein contents were 55.73; 57.93;,20.78 and 21.72 % respectively with balanced essential amino acids (methionine, histidine, arginine, threonine, leucine etc.). The cell mass contained carotenoid and various kinds of vitamins. A feeding trial was investigated in 2-month old gold fish (Carassius auratus) by replacing the flesh cells of R. gelatinosa for 50 % fish meal in the control
