Gross and histological observation on the pituitary gland of swamp buffalo

The pituitary gland, thumb shaped was divided into the anterior and posterior lobe distinctly. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, orange G-fuchsin-green, pAS-orange G and aldehyde thionin-orange G. Histomorphological structure of the glands composed of 4 parts:pars distalis, pars intermedia, pars tuberalis and pars nervosa. Each part of the gland was described. Pars distalis covered the two thirds of the gland. While the rests were pars intermedia. Pars tuberalis and pars nervosa. From the staining methods three types of cells were identified and measured : acidophil = 9.53 +- 1.40 micro g., basophil = 8.24 +- 1.51 micro g. and chromophobe 6.95 +- 0.91 micro g. The number of acidophil was the highest among the three types of cells. They concentrated more at the periphery and posterior part of the pars distalis. The basophils distribution was opposite to the acidophil and the chromophobes were more associated with them. The pars intermedia was well developed and surrounded the pars nervosa. The pars nervosa consisted of bundles of nerve fiber and pituicytes. The water buffaloes were also among the other species which had hypophyseal cleft left
