Influence of spacings on growth parameters and sugar yield of F 140 and F 156 sugarcane varieties

Preecha Neera
Plant height and stalk length at harvesting were influenced by row spacing rather than plant spacing. F140 sugarcane variety at the single row of 0.50 x 1.50 meters and F 156 at the double rows of 0.50 x 1.81-2(0.40) meters gave the maximum plant height, stalk length and also highest yield of sugar per rai. The number of millable canes per rai were influenced by plant spacings. Wider plant spacings gave the highest number of tillers and millable stalks per stool. Similar trends were also observed in the wider row spacings. When age of the crop was taken into account, it appeared that the maximum number of tillers was reached at 5 months of age after which F 140 decreased rapidly but not with F 156. The number of millable canes per rai was associated with the number of stool per rai and the number of stalk per stool. Cane yield per rai was also associated with the total number of millable stalks and the average stalk weight. Sugar yield per rai was governed by the cane tonnage and the sugar recovery per ton cane.
