Evidence for N2 - fixation in association with sweet potato roots
Hill, W.A. | Crossman, S.M. (Tuskegee Institute, Alabama (USA). Dept. of Agricultural Sciences)
Three sweet potato cultivars: Centenniel, Jewel, and Rojo Blanco were treated with 67 kg N/ha, CD inoculation, or 67 kg N/ha + CD inoculation in field and greenhouse studies. Centenniel foliage dry weight was greater with 67 kg N/ha+CD inoculation than with 67 kg N/ha. The fresh weight and nitrogen content of Jewel roots were higher with 67 kg N/ha+CD inoculation alone. Rojo Blanco did not respond to the inoculation treatment. Indirect evidence for the association of N2 fixing bacteria from roots and rhizosphere soil and differential response of sweet potato to inoculation with a selective strain of Azospirillum. Includes other indirect evidence for the possibility of associative N2-fixation in sweet potato.
