The effects of various banana production practices on soil characteristics and crop yield
1990
Zake, J.Y.K. (Makerere University, Kampala (Uganda). Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry)
An on-going study to determine the effect of varying levels of potassium, the effects of different methods of application of Furadan on soil compaction and soil fauna as well as the effect of organic matter incorporation and mulching on the yield of bananas and on the soils physical, chemical and biological properties. Measurements of pH, organic matter, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, bulk density, infiltration, soil fauna index and penetrometer resistance will be made once a year. Records on bunch yield, mean bunch weight, numbers of hands and fingers per bunch will be made. These will facilitate the determination of an appropriate combination of furadan, mulching, organic matter incorporation and chemical fertilizers for banana production. The yield characteristics of nine different varieties of bananas will be determined.
