In this course of the past five years there were several cases of phenylbutazone poisoning of racing horses in the Belgrade (Yugoslavia) racing grounds. Most common were colics with the accompanying diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, and aseptic pododermatitis. Besides, 19 horses subject to a prolonged phenylbutazone treatment were monitored for their haematological parameters. Five of them suffered from a drastic fall of the number of erythrocytes, haemoglobin and haematocrits concentrations, and two were victims of leukopaenia. In all cases described phenylbutazone has been given in doses larger than 5 g for at least seven days.
