Postvaccinal Rotavirus antibody titres in cows and their offspring

The own prepared rotavirus vaccine has been given to a small number of cows on a cattle farm encountering many problems in calf raising. The vaccine was prepared of a virulent strain of calf rotavirus (RF-45, INRA, Grignon, France). Animals were vaccinated subcutaneously at the time of high gravidity (15-40 before calving). The method of indirect immunofluorescence on BEK tissue culture was used for the detection of antibodies. Cow blood serum was examined before vaccination and so were blood and colostrum immediately postpartum and calf blood serum before and after colostrum intake. Average antibody titre in cow blood sera at calving amounted to 1:4,6, 1:16 in the colostrum and 1:3.1 in milk, while calves averaged 1:11.6 antibody titre after suckling on the colostrum. In the vaccinated group the number of diarrheic calves was less by a third in relation to the nonvaccinated group.
